Sony, the loser of the first media format war (VHS vs. Betamax) and the maker of Blu-ray, is making great strides in the next battle against HD DVD.
This past week, Warner announced that the studio would release its films exclusively in Blu-ray beginning in June. Today, Paramount has decided to drop its support for HD DVD as well. Both studios now join Walt Disney, 20th Century Fox, and MGM as exclusive backers of the Sony format. Universal Pictures remains the sole major studio in support of HD DVD. As far as MP4 players go, it would be an understatement to say that the M70 Plus was a big player, its an absolute monster of a player, its the first player that i have ever held that felt awkward for it to be held with only one hand, thats right, youre going to need to hold it with both your hands. Chuwi basically used their previous M70 player design (which ran on the RK2806 chip) and rebuilt in the internal hardware around the CC1600 media chip. Just like most current CC1600 players, it has the same abilities and features, even the same UI layout. However the biggest selling point for this player is its screen, not only is it large, but it has a resolution of 800 x 480. Patriot Box Office 1080p High-Definition Media Player PCMPBO25 (Black) Review
I won’t outline the many features as they can be quickly viewed at Patriot’s website. This is a shockingly good device (for lack of a better word), especially given the price. It’s a very new product category. While it plays nice with pc’s and macs, it is a standalone device that does not require a computer to feed from. It even has a built in BitTorrent client that can be used independently of a computer. The Roku SD box was incredibly easy to install and connect to my home wireless network. The device has performed flawlessly over the last two months. The video and sound quality of all Netflix streamed videos was amazing – everything was crisp and clear. I have not purchased anything via Amazon on Demand, so I can’t speak to that. The Roku SD box is an extremely affordable way to access Netflix content through your television set. However, if you are a person who watches a lot of online video through Youtube, Vimeo, etc., or have a lot of video on your desktop/laptop from Itunes or other sources, you should buy something else (or ‘roll your own’ – [...]). I have used the unit to play MPEG2 high definition videos recorded by Sony HDV camcorders as well as MPEG2 videos from digitized Hi8 tapes. I have also played video and JPEG photos with the unit. Here are my experience with the unit.
Pros: Handles the high definition video without problem. Can play at 2X speed smoothly. The automatic preview is quite convenient, allowing one to see the video while go through the file listing without the need for any extra button pushes. The RGB video outputs are good for me since I hooked the unit to an order Sony projection TV that does not have HDMI.
